Srinagar, April 11: Peoples Conference President and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone launched a scathing critique of the National Conference (NC), accusing the party of deliberately stalling a crucial discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill during the final days of the recent Assembly session.
In a sharply worded post on X, Lone likened the Assembly’s behavior to chaos, criticizing NC lawmakers for turning the proceedings into a spectacle. He accused the party of trying to play both the ruling and opposition roles, calling it a “failed democratic experiment.” Lone described the Assembly as being disrupted by slogan-shouting, table-climbing MLAs and said the Speaker, an NC member, acted more like an unconcerned principal overseeing a staged drama.
He alleged that NCโs refusal to support a no-confidence motion against the Speaker โ after he blocked discussion on the Waqf Bill citing sub judice status โ exposed their lack of sincerity. Lone claimed NC used its majority only to enjoy power rather than take responsibility for defending the rights of the Muslim community.
Calling NC’s conduct a betrayal of the peopleโs trust, Lone said the party had sabotaged an important opportunity to send a strong message against interference in religious matters. He warned that the chance for the Assembly โ representing Indiaโs only Muslim-majority region โ to stand united on the Waqf issue had been lost forever.
