Srinagar, May 28 โ In a significant move to uphold cleanliness during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha festivities, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has announced the launch of a free hooper service to collect and dispose of sacrificial animal waste across the city. This pioneering initiative, the first of its kind in the region, aims to tackle the challenge of waste accumulation and maintain hygienic conditions in public and residential areas.
Scheduled to operate from June 7 to June 9, the door-to-door collection service will be available daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM across all municipal wards. It will cover both households and commercial spaces engaged in Eid sacrifices, with all collected remains transported to the Achan landfill for environmentally safe disposal.
A senior SMC official highlighted the importance of this measure, noting that past Eid celebrations often saw animal waste discarded improperly, leading to health concerns, unpleasant odors, and an increase in stray animals. โThis year, weโre adopting a systematic and preventive approach to ensure a clean and healthy environment,โ the official said.
To ensure maximum participation, SMC has launched a public awareness campaign through social media and community outreach, urging residents to utilize the service. Additionally, residents can directly contact the corporation for assistance or information.
In preparation for the increased waste volume, SMC has deployed additional sanitation personnel to high-traffic areas, including markets and densely populated neighborhoods, to reinforce cleanliness efforts. The initiative aligns with SMCโs ongoing mission to modernize urban sanitation and promote responsible waste management.
Residents have welcomed the move. โThis proactive step is commendable,โ said Mohammad Altaf from Hyderpora. โIt reflects a thoughtful approach by the authorities to safeguard public health and preserve the spirit of the festival.โ
With Eid-ul-Adha approaching, the SMCโs initiative is expected to make a substantial impact on maintaining Srinagarโs cleanliness and public hygiene during the religious celebrations.
