Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday criticized the BJP-led NDA government for allegedly using Governors to suppress the voices of state governments and hinder their functioning. Emphasizing India’s strength in its diversity, Gandhi called this misuse of Governors a serious threat to federalism that must be opposed.
His remarks came in response to a post by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who condemned the Union Governmentโs move to refer a matter concerning the Tamil Nadu Governor to the President. Stalin claimed this undermines established Supreme Court rulings and weakens the mandate of elected state governments.
Stalin argued that the move seeks to legitimize Governors’ delays in approving Bills, effectively paralyzing non-BJP state legislatures. He asserted that the Union Government is trying to undermine democratic state governments and challenge the Supreme Court’s authority.
Stalin called on all opposition-led states to unite and legally resist what he described as a deliberate attempt to alter the Constitutionโs federal structure.
This political flashpoint follows the Supreme Courtโs April 8 judgment setting time limits for Governors and the President to act on state Bills. President Droupadi Murmu, however, pushed back on the ruling, questioning its validity and stating that the Constitution does not define such deadlines.
