Srinagar, Apr 11: Police on Friday stopped a protest march organized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, by setting up barricades outside the partyโs headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park and restricting the demonstrators within the premises.
Led by PDP General Secretary Khurshid Alam, a sizable group of party members gathered to oppose the Act, which was recently passed by Parliament. As they attempted to proceed towards the city centre, police intervened and closed the office gates, limiting the protest to the party compound.
Protesters held placards with slogans like โWe reject the Waqf Billโ and โNCโs silence is criminal,โ calling for the Actโs repeal. The protest concluded peacefully after a short demonstration.
Addressing the media, Khurshid Alam said the protest was intended to be peaceful but was restricted by the police. โWe wanted to voice our opposition to the Waqf Bill, which was passed during the night without consensus. Society at large rejects it,โ he stated.
He also criticized the National Conference (NC) for its inaction, saying, โThe BJPโs stance towards Muslims is unfortunate, but the NCโs silence is equally troubling. They are misleading the public.โ
