On the 34th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid floral tributes at Veer Bhumi in Delhi. Other senior Congress leaders, including Sachin Pilot, also paid their respects.

 

In a post on X, Kharge hailed Rajiv Gandhi as โ€œa great son of Indiaโ€ and credited him for transformative initiatives like lowering the voting age to 18, bolstering Panchayati Raj, advancing the Telecom and IT sectors, and introducing key reforms in education, healthcare, and peace-building efforts.

 

Sachin Pilot also remembered Rajiv Gandhi as a visionary who modernized India and gave it new direction. He referred to the former Prime Minister’s sacrifices and progressive ideas as lasting inspirations.

 

The Congress Party, in a tribute on X, described Rajiv Gandhiโ€™s contributions to modern India as unforgettable, particularly his vision for science, technology, and youth empowerment.

 

Karnataka leader DK Shivakumar called Rajiv Gandhi a pioneer of Digital India and credited him with starting the IT and telecom revolution. He shared a personal note, remembering Gandhi as a mentor and highlighting the late leaderโ€™s special connection with Karnataka โ€” symbolized by a granite piece from Kanakapura at his Sriperumbudur memorial.

 

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister in 1984 at the age of 40, following the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. He served until 1989. Born on August 20, 1944, he was assassinated on May 21, 1991, by an LTTE suicide bomber during a rally in Tamil Nadu.
