Srinagar, May 21: In a significant development, the historic Jamia Market in Downtown Srinagar opened on May 21 for the first time in 35 years, breaking a long-standing tradition of remaining closed on the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq.

The decision came as a result of sustained efforts by Srinagar Police under their community policing initiative, in collaboration with the local Market Association and the Awqaf Committee.

Since the assassination of Mirwaiz Farooq in 1990, the market had remained shut every year on this date. However, this yearโ€™s reopening was achieved through consistent dialogue and trust-building between the police and community stakeholders.

A senior police official emphasized that the initiative wasnโ€™t about enforcement, but about partnership and understanding. He said the decision reflects a respectful balance between tradition and everyday life.

Traders and members of the Awqaf Committee supported the move, describing it as a positive sign of progress. โ€œWe continue to honor the past,โ€ said a shopkeeper, โ€œbut itโ€™s also important to maintain our livelihoods and daily routines.โ€
