Srinagar, May 28 โ Jammu and Kashmir is set to expand its electric bus fleet, with 200 new e-buses expected to arrive by June 2025. As per a proposal submitted to the Government of India, both Jammu and Srinagar will receive 100 electric buses each from this upcoming batch.
Currently, the Union Territory operates 200 e-busesโ100 in each cityโbut officials highlighted that several areas still lack adequate public transport coverage. โWeโve responded to a request from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs with a proposal for 200 more e-buses,โ said Devansh Yadav, CEO of Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL).
He added that tenders have already been floated, and the buses are likely to be supplied by Tata Motors or another qualified vendor, depending on the final bid outcome. These additions are aimed at strengthening public transport infrastructure and improving last-mile connectivity.
Electric buses were first introduced in the UT in January 2024, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. To ensure long-term sustainability, JSCL revised fares last month, raising tariffs by 7% to accommodate operational cost increases.
In a progressive move, the J&K government has also made e-bus travel free for women across the UT, encouraging more female commuters to opt for public transport.
