Srinagar, May 28: In a significant step to bolster legislative oversight, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Wednesday announced the nomination of members to nine key committees of the House. The appointments, made under various provisions of the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, will remain effective until March 31, 2026.

 

Among the notable appointments, Surjeet Singh Slathia has been named Chairman of the Ethics Committee, with members including Javaid Iqbal, Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed (Pardesi), Zafar Ali Khatana, Rafiq Ahmad Naik, Dr. Sajjad Shafi, Arvind Gupta, Daleep Singh, Surinder Kumar, Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh, and Mehraj Malik.

 

Sajad Gani Lone will lead the Committee on Government Assurances, formed under Rule 361. Other members include Choudhary Mohammed Akram, Javaid Ahmad Mirchal, Iftkar Ahmed, Hilal Akbar Lone, Mian Mehar Ali, Mohan Lal, Dr. Sunil Bhardwaj, and Shagun Parihar.

 

Under Rule 341, the Committee on Petitions will be chaired by Pirzada Farooq Ahmed Shah, with members such as Mushtaq Guroo, Salman Sagar, Waheed Ur Rehman Para, Mian Mehar Ali, Vijay Kumar, and Thakur Randhir Singh.

 

Nizam ud din Bhat has been appointed as Chairman of the Committee on Privileges (Rule 350), which includes Vikram Randhawa, Riyaz Ahmad Khan, Salman Sagar, Sheikh Ahsan Ahmed (Pardesi), Javaid Riyaz, Javaid Iqbal, Dr. Narinder Singh Raina, and Dr. Bharat Bhushan.

 

The Committee on Subordinate Legislation, constituted under Rule 355(1), will be chaired by Hasnain Masoodi. Members include Reyaz Ahmad Khan, Hilal Akbar Lone, Shabir Ahmad Kullay, Satish Kumar Sharma, Kuldeep Raj Dubey, Rajeev Kumar, Irfan Hafiz Lone, and Dr. Rameshwar Singh.

 

Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami will head the Committee on Environment (Clause 1 of Appendix-I), joined by Peerzada Mohammad Syed, Rajiv Jasrotia, Dr. Sajjad Shafi, Peerzada Feroze Ahmad, Zafar Ali Khatana, Khurshied Ahmed, Mushtaq Guroo, Irshad Rasool Kar, Yudhvir Sethi, and Darshan Kumar.

 

Additionally, three Financial Committees have been reconstituted for 2025–2026: the Public Accounts Committee led by Sham Lal Sharma, the Estimates Committee chaired by Shamim Firdous, and the Committee on Public Undertakings headed by Ali Mohammad Sagar. Each financial committee includes ten members drawn from the legislative body.
