Srinagar, June 5 โ€“ To mark World Environment Day, the Housing & Urban Development Department (H&UDD) of Jammu and Kashmir launched tree plantation drives at Eco Park in Srinagar and JDA Park in Jammu under the national campaign โ€œEk Ped Maa Ke Naam.โ€

 

In Srinagar, the event witnessed the participation of key officials including MLA Hazratbal Salman Sagar, who planted the first sapling to kick off the initiative. Commissioner Secretary to the Government, H&UDD, Mandeep Kaur, along with senior officials from the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, LCMA, AMRUT, ULB-Kashmir, SDA, and the J&K Housing Board, also took part in the drive.

 

Salman Sagar hailed the initiative, saying it will help strengthen the regionโ€™s green cover, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. Commissioner Secretary Mandeep Kaur emphasized that the campaign honors the selfless spirit of mothers while promoting urban greening. She encouraged public participation in the cause.

 

Officials also engaged in discussions on sustainable development, environmental protection, and urban ecological planning. Dr. Owais Ahmed highlighted the importance of such efforts in preserving urban ecosystems.

 

Meanwhile, in Jammu, a parallel plantation drive was launched under the Women for Tree Campaign, part of the AMRUT MITRA initiative by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The event began at JDA Park, Muthi Camp, with MLA Jammu West Arvind Gupta planting the inaugural tree. It was attended by senior officers from the Jammu Development Authority and the Forest Department, as well as members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under DAY-NULM.

 

The Women for Tree Campaign will run until August 31, 2025, during which women-led SHGs will plant over 2,700 saplings at 51 sites, including public parks and water bodies across Jammu and Kashmir. These groups will also be responsible for caring for and maintaining the trees for the next two years.
