Awantipora, May 21: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC) at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organized a community outreach program on Wednesday at Mantaqui Memorial Waqf Higher Secondary School.
The initiative aimed to introduce students to the diverse career opportunities available in media and communication. Faculty members, students, and staff from the department interacted with school students and alumni, offering career guidance and practical insights into the media industry.
Dr. Rabia Noor, Head of DJMC, briefed students on the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. She highlighted its interdisciplinary and skills-based curriculum that supports both employment and entrepreneurial goals.
Dr. Mujeeb Liyakat, Assistant Professor and Community Connect Coordinator, spoke about various career paths in journalism, electronic media, public relations, and advertising.
To give students a feel of industry practices, the department showcased its student-run publication Times Echo and other media platforms. One-on-one discussions and interactive sessions addressed student queries and encouraged them to explore media careers.
Dr. Sayar Mir conducted a session on visual communication and design, while Zahoor Ahmad Gilkar, Junior Technical Assistant, offered practical training in photography.
Given the school’s proximity to IUST, both institutions also discussed future collaborations and academic partnerships.
