Handwara, May 21: The long-awaited Handwara-Bangus road project, a 40-kilometre route aimed at enhancing tourism and connectivity in North Kashmir, is making steady progress, with 10 kilometres already completed and another 10 set for completion by the end of June.

Farooq Ahmad Shah, Executive Engineer of PWD Handwara, confirmed the update, highlighting the road’s strategic and tourism potential. “This road is vital for our region. It will provide the safest and most accessible route to the scenic Bangus Valley,” Shah said.

The project is being executed in phases, with Phase 1 completed and Phase 2 currently underway at a sanctioned cost of Rs 27 crore. The goal is to finish 20 kilometres of the road during this construction season.

Traversing through forested and picturesque terrain, the road is being built with environmental sensitivity in mind. Its width is limited to 5.5 meters to minimize ecological impact. “We’re committed to protecting the forest and preserving the natural beauty,” Shah assured.

Plans for Phase 3 include promoting eco-tourism, with proposals for tourist attractions such as waterfronts and scenic spots along the route. “This is not just a development project—it’s a dream for the whole district,” Shah remarked.

He emphasized that all work is being carried out with the proper government approvals and in compliance with official norms. Shah also appealed to the public to help preserve the environment by avoiding littering and reducing plastic use.

Once completed, the Handwara-Bangus road is expected to significantly boost the local economy by enhancing tourist access and creating new livelihood opportunities for residents. “This road will become a symbol of pride for Handwara and a gateway to Bangus’ untouched beauty,” Shah concluded.
