Ganderbal, May 25: In a compassionate show of solidarity, residents of Batwina village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have announced a reward of ₹1 lakh for anyone who helps locate the body of a missing forest guard who drowned in the Sindh River.

The guard, Shameem Ahmad Mir (45), a Batwina native, reportedly slipped into the river on Friday while on duty in Compartment No. 01, Paribal. Despite sustained rescue efforts, he remains untraced.

A multi-agency operation involving Marine Commandos (MARCOS), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), J&K Police, Forest Department personnel, and local volunteers is ongoing along the challenging river terrain.

Deeply affected by the situation and the distress of Mir’s family, the villagers pooled together to offer the cash reward, hoping it will aid in locating the body and providing closure.

Rescue efforts have now entered their third day.
