Tourism Surge in Kashmir: Local Operators Call for Dedicated Advisor to Revive Sector

Despite record visitor numbers, lack of promotion and high accommodation costs hinder growth, say industry stakeholders.

Srinagar, January 23, 2025 — Amid an unprecedented tourism boom in Kashmir, local tour and travel operators, including hoteliers and houseboat owners, have raised concerns over challenges threatening the sector’s long-term sustainability. In a joint press briefing held today, industry representatives called on the government to appoint a dedicated tourism advisor to address key issues and promote the region effectively.

While the tourism sector has outperformed other industries, with over 100,000 individuals joining its ranks in the last five years, stakeholders highlighted that insufficient promotional campaigns and soaring accommodation costs are deterring potential visitors. “Tourism is thriving, but the lack of targeted promotion is affecting business on the ground,” a spokesperson stated.

The representatives further emphasized the urgent need to revive the houseboat industry, which has dwindled to just 750 operational houseboats, and improve connectivity by introducing direct train services to Kashmir. “The houseboat legacy is integral to Kashmir’s identity, yet it is rapidly declining. We need immediate action to protect and promote this unique heritage,” they said.

The group stressed that appointing a dedicated advisor for the tourism sector would ensure the industry’s concerns are heard and addressed at the policy level. Additionally, they urged for solutions to tackle environmental challenges, which are crucial for maintaining the region’s natural beauty and appeal.

The stakeholders concluded with a call for collaboration, urging both government and private players to work together to unlock the true potential of Kashmir’s tourism industry while safeguarding its cultural and environmental assets.
