PDP Reiterates Pledge to Restore Special Status of Jammu & Kashmir
Srinagar, Dec 14 (TGT): The General Council of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) convened in Srinagar and reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to the party’s core principles.
“We resolve to intensify our peaceful struggle for dignity and lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir, employing all democratic and constitutional measures to address the Kashmir issue, including the restoration of the special status enjoyed by our people under the Constitution of India until August 5, 2019,” read a statement issued by the PDP.
The council acknowledged the results of the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. While the PDP’s performance fell short of expectations, the party expressed confidence that the elected representatives would effectively represent the people’s concerns, aspirations, and opinions.
The PDP called on the Union government and the broader Indian public to recognize the disempowerment, deprivation, and humiliation caused by the unconstitutional abrogation of J&K’s special constitutional provisions, including Article 370.
Expectations from the Ruling National Conference
The meeting expressed hope that the current Jammu and Kashmir government, led by the National Conference, would honor the significant public mandate and commitments made in its manifesto. However, it noted that the government’s initial actions have not fully lived up to these expectations. The PDP urged the administration to recognize the true essence of its mandate and govern with accountability and purpose.
Governance and Development
The PDP emphasized the need for the government to address pressing issues such as chronic electricity shortages, rising unemployment, the drug crisis, the exploitation of natural resources, and the environmental damage resulting from unsustainable practices.
The party also demanded an immediate review of the status of political prisoners detained across the country. It called for the release of individuals held on tenuous or unsubstantiated charges and the transfer of prisoners back to Jammu and Kashmir to maintain familial and legal support.
Concerns Over Growing Intolerance
Expressing grave concern over the rising tide of hatred against Muslims in India, the PDP urged the Prime Minister to use his authority to curb violence, counter false narratives, and prevent the marginalization of Muslims through what it described as judicial overreach.
“We reaffirm our belief in India as a nation founded on diversity, mutual respect, and the safeguarding of individual rights and beliefs,” the party concluded, emphasizing its hope for a return to inclusive governance and unity.
