The Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in all school buses by January 31, 2025, to enhance student safety during transit.

Transport Commissioner Vishesh Mahajan emphasized that this initiative aims to monitor the activities of drivers and assisting staff, ensuring continuous safety for students.

In a recent meeting with school representatives, the following directives were issued:

Speed Governors: All school buses must be equipped with functional speed governors, limiting speed to 40 km/h.

Compliance Enforcement: Vehicles found violating safety norms, such as overloading or overspeeding, will face immediate seizure.

Underage Driving Prevention: Schools are to prevent underage students from operating vehicles on or near school premises and conduct counseling sessions with parents about the dangers and legal implications of underage driving.

Additionally, schools must ensure that both their own and privately hired vehicles adhere to mandatory safety guidelines, including:

  • Emergency exit doors
  • Fire extinguishers
  • First-aid kits
  • GPS trackers
  • Seat belts
  • Fire detection alarm systems

The Transport Department is committed to implementing all safety measures as outlined by the Supreme Court to safeguard children during their commute.
