Over 28,000 women in Jammu and Kashmir and 2,500 in Ladakh benefited from the Government of Indiaโs Hub for Empowerment of Women (HEW) scheme in 2024โ25, according to data from the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The initiative, under Mission Shakti, offers legal aid, financial literacy, and access to welfare schemes. The number of beneficiaries has steadily risen over the past three years in both regions.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), which provides โน6,000 to pregnant and lactating mothers, more than 1.41 lakh women in J&K and 2,510 in Ladakh received support this fiscal year. However, remote areas like Keran, Gurez, and Kargil still face accessibility issues due to tough terrain and low awareness. To counter this, the government is using digital platforms, door-to-door outreach, and special registration drives.
A 100-day campaign has also been launched under HEW to boost womenโs empowerment through health camps, awareness workshops, and community engagement. Authorities stress that these efforts are vital for ensuring gender-inclusive development in the region.
