Pahalgam, June 14: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has announced the phased reopening of 16 tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir, set to begin on June 17. The move comes after a comprehensive security review following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which had led to the temporary closure of several sites.

Speaking during a visit to Pahalgam, LG Sinha said that eight locations in each divisionโ€”Jammu and Kashmirโ€”will reopen initially, with more to follow based on further assessments. The decision was made after consultations with Divisional Commissioners, Inspectors General of Police, and district-level reports.

โ€œThis is only the first step. A dedicated committee will continue to evaluate security and coordinate with the tourism department for the reopening of additional destinations,โ€ the LG stated.

In Kashmir Division, the sites slated for reopening include Betab Valley, Pahalgam Market Parks, Verinag Garden, Kokernag Garden, Achabal Garden, Badamwari Park in Srinagar, Duck Park near Nigeen, and Taqdeer Park near Hazratbal. In Jammu Division, the spots include Sarthal and Dhaggar (Kathua), Devi Pindi, Siyad Baba, Sula Park (Reasi), Guldanda and Jai Valley (Doda), and Pancheri (Udhampur).

During his visit, LG Sinha also held meetings with local representatives, tour operators, hoteliers, and members of the Ponywala Association, assuring them that restrictions on other destinations would be lifted following further evaluations.

He urged public cooperation for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, which begins on July 3, stressing that it is a collective responsibility. The administration has bolstered infrastructureโ€”roads, power, telecom, and accommodationโ€”to ensure smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.

The LG reviewed arrangements at the Nunwan Base Camp and emphasized the creation of a secure, tourist-friendly environment to restore confidence among visitors. โ€œSecurity arrangements are robust, and we are committed to rebuilding trust through improved infrastructure and responsive governance,โ€ he said.

Highlighting a rise in tourist interest, LG Sinha noted that Vande Bharat train tickets on the Katraโ€“Srinagar route are sold out for the next 10โ€“12 days, while parliamentary and official meetings in Srinagar signal a broader return to stability.

The announcement marks a significant step toward reviving the regionโ€™s tourism-dependent economy, with government agencies optimistic that a steady increase in footfall will follow.
