Jammu, April 17: A powerful windstorm accompanied by heavy rain struck Jammu and surrounding areas on Wednesday evening, causing significant damage, particularly to the power infrastructure.
The severe weather began around 7:40 PM, leading to widespread power outages across major parts of Jammu, including Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Canal Road, and nearby outskirts. High-speed winds uprooted trees, electric poles, tin roofs, and billboards, also causing damage to several vehicles in different localities.
The strong winds were followed by heavy rainfall, further compounding the situation. A section of the wall near the Civil Secretariat, along the Dogra Hall stretch, collapsed and damaged several vehicles. Additionally, a mobile tower in the Bagh-e-Bahu area also fell due to the storm.
Power Development Department (PDD) officials stated that restoration work was in progress, although the full extent of the damage would be known only after a thorough assessment. Power had not been fully restored in several areas by late evening.
