Amid heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) following multiple ceasefire violations and failed drone and missile attacks by Pakistan, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have relocated residents from forward villages to safer camps.
Local officials confirmed that several villages along the LoC have been evacuated, with displaced families moved to specially arranged shelters equipped with food, water, infant milk, and medical facilities.
โWe have come here from the border because of the rising tensions. The government has provided us with all basic necessities,โ said Nisha Sharma, a villager staying at one of the camps. โWe hope the situation returns to normal so we can go back home.โ
Another villager, Gopal Singh, praised the government for arranging transportation and ensuring food and medical aid. โOfficials are regularly checking on us,โ he added.
Ved Ram Sahu echoed similar gratitude, noting that the relocation was a precaution amid the worsening security environment.
However, some residents have chosen to remain in their villages despite the risk. โPakistan never fights openly; it attacks from behind,โ said Tasrim Lal, who criticized Pakistanโs actions. โBut since Indiaโs precision strikes, we havenโt seen any movement on their side. They know India will retaliate strongly.โ
Karnail Singh, a resident of a village close to the LoC, shared that many women and children have been moved out while some villagers have stayed back. โWeโve witnessed multiple wars; weโre not afraid. But Pakistan canโt be trusted, so families have been shifted,โ he said.
The evacuation comes after India carried out Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes targeting terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
Indian defence sources reported that nine key terror sites linked to groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen were hit, with over 100 terrorists eliminated. Four camps were struck inside Pakistan and five in PoJK.
In retaliation, Pakistan attempted drone and missile strikes on military sites across northern and western India, including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Chandigarh. These attacks were successfully intercepted by Indiaโs air defence systems, including the S-400 Sudarshan Chakra.
India also targeted Pakistani air defence systems, including a reported strike on a site near Lahore.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has intensified cross-border shelling, using mortars and heavy artillery across sectors in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri. Sixteen civilians, including three women and five children, have been killed by Pakistani firing so far.
The Indian military reiterated its commitment to avoid escalation but warned that any further provocation would be met with a firm response.
