Srinagar, June 5 โ In the aftermath of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives, Kashmirโs tourism industry came to a standstill as numerous bookings were cancelled and hotels remained largely empty. However, the situation is steadily improving, with tourists beginning to return to the valley.
Visitors from Gujarat and Maharashtra are once again exploring popular destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. Many of these travelers had previously canceled their trips but are now making fresh bookings, signaling a revival in confidence.
Locals have warmly welcomed the returning tourists. Srinagar-based hotelier Asif Burza shared, โThe attack broke our hearts, but thanks to our leadersโ efforts, people feel safe again. Itโs heartening to see happy faces on the roads.โ
In Pahalgam, shopkeeper Zahida Begum expressed similar sentiments: โItโs wonderful to see tourists walking here again. It brings vitality and hope back to our valley.โ
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has played an active role in reviving tourism, visiting key destinations after the attack, meeting with stakeholders, and implementing safety measures. His initiatives have helped rebuild confidence among visitors.
Mohammad Zubair, a tourist from Gujarat, said, โWe were initially hesitant, but everything here feels safe. Security is visible, and the locals are incredibly warm and welcoming.โ
Another tourist, Mohammad Aftab, also from Gujarat, said, โSeeing happy tourists in videos gave us the courage to come. The beauty of Kashmir and the kindness of its people will stay with us forever.โ
While the number of visitors remains modest, the upward trend offers hope for the tourism-reliant communities. Mushtaq Ahmed, a guide in Gulmarg, said, โTourists are like blossomsโwhen they return, our lives bloom too.โ
With support from the government, locals, and visitors, Kashmirโs tourism sector is gradually recovering.
