Srinagar: Eminent Shia scholar and religious leader Agha Syed Mohammad Baqir Al-Moosavi passed away early Friday following a brief illness at the age of 85.
A prominent figure from the Aga family of Budgam, Agha Baqir had been unwell for some time. His condition worsened and he was taken to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, where he passed away in the early hours.
Family sources said his funeral prayers will be held after Friday prayers, and he will be buried at his ancestral graveyard in Budgam.
Renowned for his scholarly depth, powerful speeches, and literary contributions, Agha Baqir began leading the community in 1982 after the passing of his father, Agha Syed Yusuf.
He began his religious education at Babul Ilm in Budgam and later advanced his studies at Hawza Ilmiyya in Najaf, Iraq — a premier institution for Shia theology. His dedication to Islamic philosophy and jurisprudence earned him wide respect.
Fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Kashmiri, he authored numerous works on theology, jurisprudence, and Islamic history. He was also the official representative of Grand Ayatollah Syed Ali Sistani in Kashmir.
