Srinagar, May 18 – Gusty winds and rainfall caused significant damage across parts of north and central Kashmir on Sunday, affecting residential properties and public infrastructure. The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, by late Monday afternoon.
Winds reaching speeds of 35–45 kmph swept through districts like Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, and Bandipora, uprooting trees, blocking roads, and damaging rooftops. Baramulla was particularly affected, with multiple roads obstructed by debris. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
In Tangmarg and Chandilora markets and some areas in Budgam, several homes were damaged, with roofs either partially or completely torn off. Reports from Baramulla town also highlighted damage to buildings and vehicles struck by falling trees and debris.
Power supply was disrupted across north Kashmir due to damaged transformers and snapped lines. The Power Development Department has launched restoration efforts.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, said light to moderate rain and thunderstorms were recorded in most areas of Kashmir and parts of Jammu, including Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda, and Kishtwar.
“Heavy rain with gusty winds may affect some parts of Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Srinagar, Budgam, and Ganderbal in the next 2–3 hours,” Dr. Mukhtar added.
Relief and restoration efforts are underway, with disaster management teams on high alert in affected areas.
