Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) on Tuesday announced the detention of a radical social media user for spreading anti-national content online.
According to a police spokesperson, CIK detained Hilal Mir, also known as Hilal Saqi, a resident of Bemina, Srinagar, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the misuse of social media for radical activities and protect Kashmiri youth from falling into extremist networks. Authorities also seized his digital devices, including a mobile phone and laptop.
Hilal Mir, who operated the X account โhilal mirโ and Facebook account โMir Hilal,โ was allegedly posting extremist and distorted content aimed at disturbing peace, spreading disaffection, promoting secessionist ideology, and portraying India negatively.
Police said he was actively sharing material designed to incite young minds and stir secessionist sentiments by depicting Kashmiris as victims of systematic violence. His activities were seen as an attempt to cultivate public resentment, posing a threat to security and sovereignty.
A preliminary review of his seized devices revealed access to the radical accounts, along with other incriminating content. The suspect was also reportedly in contact with foreign-based phone numbers involved in suspicious activities, possibly receiving instructions to disrupt peace in the region. The investigation is ongoing.
