Srinagar, May 17:
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday acknowledged that the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam has dealt a serious blow to tourism in Kashmir, stating that the governmentโs immediate priority is to ensure the safe conduct of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.
โTourism has suffered greatly this season. The summer months, typically the busiest for visitors, have nearly gone to waste. Only a handful of tourists are arriving now,โ Omar said during a press briefing at his Srinagar residence.
He stressed that the administration is fully focused on securing a smooth and safe pilgrimage. โOur main goal is to ensure that every pilgrim completes the Amarnath Yatra safely. Once thatโs achieved, weโll shift focus to reviving tourism in the Valley,โ he said.
Addressing diplomatic efforts, the Chief Minister welcomed Indiaโs decision to send multi-party delegations abroad following the Pahalgam attack and the military action under โOperation Sindoor.โ He said such outreach would help reinforce Indiaโs stance on terrorism to the international community.
โItโs a good move to send delegations comprising leaders from major political parties to other countries. This gives us a platform to explain Indiaโs position,โ he noted, drawing a parallel to the diplomatic outreach during the 2001 Parliament attack under then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayeeโs โOperation Parakram.โ
On the situation at the border, Omar said there have been no reports of ceasefire violations. โCurrently, both sides are respecting the agreement,โ he said.
He also informed that the government is evaluating the extent of damage in affected border areas and will soon propose a compensation plan. โOnce we have a comprehensive report, we will start the compensation process and seek central assistance if needed,โ he added.
