Drass, May 15: The Al Hima-laya Green Mission & Research Centre successfully concluded its One Lakh Mega Plantation Drive with a ceremony at Government Degree College, Drass. The campaign saw the planting of 1,02,505 saplings across Kargil district, including native and ecologically vital species like Juniper, Seabuckthorn, Willow, Poplar, and fruit trees.
Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, was the Chief Guest. Praising the effort, he highlighted the importance of ensuring the saplings survive and are cared for like children.
Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Srikant Balasaheb Suse (IAS), who supported the campaign from the beginning, expressed his satisfaction with its execution and assured future support for ecological initiatives.
JUIAK Ladakh President, Sheikh Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi, officially confirmed the plantation numbers and underlined the significance of using native species for both cultural and ecological balance. He thanked all partners — including the District Administration, Forest Department, schools, religious organizations, and volunteers — and announced that the final phase would begin soon in Zanskar.
Other key speakers included LAHDC Executive Councillor Er. Punchok Tashi, SSP Kargil Shree Ram R. (IPS), Director FCS&CA Tahir Hussain Zubdav (JKAS), DFO Shakil Ahmad, Councillor Abdul Samad, and Abdul Wahid. All emphasized sustainable environmental practices.
The campaign is part of the broader Al Hima-laya Green Mission, which combines Islamic ecological values with modern conservation, inspired by “Hima” (protected zones) and “Laya” (Himalayas). The goal is to make Ladakh a global model of faith-based ecological stewardship.
The event concluded with a unified pledge to care for the saplings, ensuring a greener future for coming generations.
