Srinagar, May 17: In a major move to bolster support for victims of terrorism and civil unrest, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has approved a significant hike in ex-gratia relief under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme.
The revised policy applies to civilians, government employees, ex-police servicemen, magistrates on duty, and Village Defence Guards (VDGs). It supplements the existing central provision of โน5 lakh for death or permanent disability due to terrorism.
Under the new structure, compensation for the death of civilians has increased from โน1 lakh to โน2.5 lakh, while support for permanent disability has doubled from โน75,000 to โน1.5 lakh. For ex-police personnel, death relief has been raised from โน2 lakh to โน4 lakh, and disability support has also doubled to โน1.5 lakh.
Magistrates on duty will now receive โน5 lakh in the event of death, up from โน2 lakh, and โน1.5 lakh for permanent disability. VDGs will be entitled to โน2.5 lakh for death and โน1.5 lakh for disability, acknowledging their role in community protection.
The most substantial increase benefits government employees who die due to acts of violence while on dutyโtheir ex-gratia has surged from โน1 lakh to โน5 lakh. For permanent disability, the revised figure is now โน1.5 lakh, up from โน75,000.
LG Sinha paid tribute to all civilians and personnel who lost their lives in service to the nation. He noted that India’s commitment to peace remains firm despite decades of cross-border terrorism and highlighted the success of Operation Sindoor, which he said has shifted Indiaโs stance from deterrence to decisive action.
โPakistan will face severe consequences for any future misadventure,โ he warned, while also reaffirming the administration’s commitment to the welfare of those supporting Jammu and Kashmirโs internal security. โWe are determined to ensure the families of martyrs live with dignity and comfort,โ he said.
