Thiruvananthapuram, April 17: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of leveraging the Waqf (Amendment) Act for political advantage, calling the move unconstitutional and discriminatory.

Addressing reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, Vijayan alleged that the RSS, through its mouthpiece Organiser, had identified minoritiesโ€”particularly Muslims and Christiansโ€”as internal enemies of the country. He claimed the Waqf Amendment Bill was being misrepresented as a solution to the long-standing issues of Munambam residents, who have resisted relocation after residing there for decades.

The Chief Minister said the government had earlier appointed a commission to study the concerns of Munambam residents, and with the High Court’s clearance, steps were being taken to protect their rights. However, he alleged that the BJP and Sangh Parivar sought to exploit the situation for political gain by presenting the Waqf Bill as a fix-all solution.

Vijayan criticised Union Minister Kiren Rijijuโ€™s recent visit to Kerala, stating that his comments during a press conference in Kochi inadvertently revealed the central governmentโ€™s lack of a concrete solution for the Munambam issue. According to Vijayan, Rijiju admitted the bill offers no retroactive relief, contradicting claims made earlier by BJP leaders and exposing what the CM called a politically motivated move.

He further argued that the bill violates Article 26 of the Constitution, which protects religious freedoms, and described the Centreโ€™s stance as deeply anti-minority and aligned with majoritarian communal interests. The Kerala Assembly, he noted, had unanimously passed a resolution against the bill, with Left parties also opposing it in Parliament.

Vijayan concluded by stating that the RSS’s agenda was aimed at marginalising minorities under the guise of reform, using religious properties and sentiments as political tools.
