Jammu, June 01: The Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) Jammu enthusiastically celebrated World Milk Day 2025, highlighting the vital role of the dairy sector in improving nutrition, boosting rural livelihoods, and strengthening the economy in the Union Territory. With the dairy industry booming, Jammu and Kashmir aims for an annual growth rate of 7.5 percent in the milk sector.

The event, held at the departmentโ€™s office, saw active participation from dairy farmers, industry experts, and community members. This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œLetโ€™s Celebrate the Power of Dairy,โ€ framed discussions and recognitions focused on sustainable dairy development.

Dr. Parvinder Singh Sudan, Director of AHD Jammu and Kashmir, was the chief guest. He lauded the dairy industry as a โ€œfoundation of rural economy and nutrition securityโ€ and announced a new initiative to procure sex-sorted semen from high-quality US bulls this financial year to enhance genetic traits and productivity.

โ€œMilk is more than just nutrition โ€” it is livelihood, empowerment, and a key driver of our rural economy,โ€ Dr. Sudan said. The event also honored progressive dairy farmers from Jammu for their innovative practices, higher yields, and commitment to hygienic, scientific milk production.

Veterinary experts held informative sessions on advanced dairy techniques, animal health, and value-added milk processing to equip stakeholders with the latest knowledge.

The dairy sector in J&K has grown remarkably, with per capita milk availability increasing from 56 grams in 2000 to 600 grams in 2024, surpassing national averages and ICMR guidelines. Supported by the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and allied schemes, the sector is expected to continue growing at 7.5 percent annually, making the UT a model for dairy-driven rural progress.

World Milk Day, initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and observed every June 1, celebrates milkโ€™s global significance and supports the dairy industryโ€™s contribution to health and development. Jammuโ€™s celebration emphasized how dairy is transforming lives, one glass at a time.
