With vibrant flags and banners reading โWelcome to Paradiseโ fluttering in the breeze, nearly 300 vehicles set off from the scenic shores of Dal Lake on Sunday morning, headed for Pahalgam. The aim: to send a strong message of hope and resilience.
The road show, organized by members of Kashmirโs tourism industry and joined by hoteliers, transporters, traders, and enthusiastic youth, was a symbolic stand against fear โ a direct response to the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which left 26 tourists dead and deeply shook the regionโs tourism-dependent economy.
โCancellations flooded in overnight after the attack,โ said Amir Majeed, a leading tour operator and rally organiser. โHotels stood empty, guides were without work, and even shikara rides came to a halt. But todayโs rally is our declaration โ Kashmir is safe, and weโre ready to welcome the world.โ
The April attack had created a wave of panic. Tourism, already slowly recovering from the impacts of COVID-19 and regional unrest, came to a standstill. But this rally โ passing through Anantnag, Bijbehara, and Mattan โ aimed to turn the tide. Locals came out in support, waving at the convoy, distributing snacks, and chanting slogans like โAman Ka Paigham โ Kashmir Ki Shaan!โ (A message of peace โ the pride of Kashmir).
โThis isnโt just about reviving tourism,โ said Manzoor Kundroo, a passionate participant who drove from Dal Lake in a festively decorated van. โItโs about proving that we, the people of Kashmir, are united in peace.โ
Riyaz Ahmed, a Srinagar-based hotelier, echoed the sentiment: โTourism is our backbone โ economically and emotionally. Itโs how we connect with the world.โ
Since the April incident, security has been tightened across key tourist zones, with increased patrols and checkpoints to reassure visitors. Authorities continue to roll out initiatives aimed at restoring trust.
When the caravan reached Pahalgam, the atmosphere had transformed. Locals welcomed the rally with traditional Kehwa, snacks, and vibrant folk performances like Rouf dances โ a powerful symbol of hope, unity, and cultural pride.
โThis is the Kashmir I dream of for the next generation,โ said Waseem Ahmad, a young travel blogger capturing the event live. โA land of peace, heritage, and breathtaking beauty โ not a place shadowed by fear.โ
