On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited the Salamabad area of Uri in Baramulla district, which had been recently affected by shelling from Pakistan. During his visit, he interacted with local residents impacted by the violence.
Abdullah expressed sympathy for the pain and loss experienced by the people in these border villages, emphasizing that the suffering was “deeply personal.” He posted on X, saying, “These visits should have been about sharing joy and discussing development, not offering condolences. The pain of my people is deeply personal.”
The shelling, which followed India’s Operation Sindoor in retaliation to a terror attack in Pahalgam, caused extensive damage to homes in Jammu and Kashmir’s border regions. Local residents are demanding compensation for their damaged properties and have urged the Indian government to hold Pakistan accountable for its actions.
Vijay Kumar, a resident of Nowshera, shared how his house, built with his life savings, was damaged by the shelling. He said this was the first time he and his family had to flee their home, despite enduring similar attacks in 2002, 2004, and 2005. He called for government compensation for the destruction of homes in the village, stating, “There is no point announcing a โceasefireโ since Pakistan will not learn. They should be held accountable.”
The Indian Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad is actively defusing unexploded shells in areas near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmirโs Rajouri district, ensuring the safety of residents. The operation is essential for the safety of those living close to the International Border (IB), which had been heavily shelled by Pakistan before the ceasefire agreement on May 10.
The shelling has caused widespread damage in Jammu and Kashmir, affecting infrastructure, homes, and leading to civilian casualties. JK Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo earlier announced that efforts were underway to compensate those affected by the shelling, with plans to build more bunkers in border areas for protection.
