New Delhi, May 9: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, sources confirmed on Friday. The decision comes at a critical stage of the tournament, with the final originally slated for May 25.
The suspension follows Thursday night’s abrupt cancellation of the Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala. Spectators were asked to vacate the venue, and both teams were safely escorted to their hotels. Punjab Kings later confirmed the match cancellation on social media, as fans exiting the stadium chanted anti-Pakistan slogans.
The disruption occurred amid escalating tensions along Indiaโs borders. According to the Indian Army, Pakistan launched multiple drone and munition attacks along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) on the night of May 8โ9. The Army reported successfully intercepting these attacks and retaliating to ceasefire violations.
Defence officials highlighted the role of Indiaโs indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system in neutralizing the drone threats. Both the Indian Army and Air Force have deployed the system along the border, which offers medium-range protection and the ability to engage multiple aerial targets simultaneously.
Sources also revealed that the Indian Army had shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones during a large-scale counter-drone operation along the LoC and International Border. Additionally, Indian forces neutralized a Pakistani air defense system near Lahore during retaliatory strikes.
The armed forces reiterated their commitment to defending Indiaโs sovereignty, vowing to respond forcefully to any hostile action.
