Kolkata, June 1:Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that Indiaโs criminal justice system is transitioning into a new era, emphasizing the need for robust forensic institutions to support a secure, transparent, and evidence-driven legal framework.
During his two-day visit to West Bengal, Shah inaugurated the new building of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) at Rajarhat, Kolkata. Speaking at the event, he said, โIndia is building a criminal justice system that is secure, transparent, and grounded in evidence. To stay ahead of criminals, our enforcement mechanisms must be more advanced.โ
He noted that even before the implementation of the three new criminal lawsโBharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)โthe central government had already laid the foundation for strong forensic support by setting up the first National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in 2020.
Highlighting progress, Shah said eight NFSU institutions have already been established across the country, with eight more in the pipeline. He stressed that graduates from these institutions would be key in enhancing law enforcement and judicial processes.
Shah also mentioned the governmentโs initiative to help every state deploy forensic vans at the district level and expand local forensic labs. โWe have already trained a significant number of forensic professionals, and these students will play an essential role in maintaining law and order,โ he said.
He underlined the governmentโs commitment to ensuring quick and fair justice, particularly for the underprivileged. โOur goal is to build a justice system that the people can trust, especially the poor,โ he added.
Shahโs visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs recent tour of North Bengal, signaling the Centreโs continued attention toward West Bengal. He had earlier shared on social media that he would inaugurate the CFSL building and later attend the Vijay Sankalp Karyakarta Sammelan in Kolkata to engage with party workers.
His trip is also seen as part of the BJPโs larger strategy to prepare for the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
