Srinagar, May 31 โ In a prompt and resolute action, Srinagar Police has uncovered and dismantled an online fraud scheme involving a fake medical donation plea circulated on Facebook.
According to a police spokesperson, on May 30, 2025, Police Station Nowhatta received a written complaint from Muneer Ahmad Misger, a resident of Mughal Masjid, Nowhatta. Misger alleged that an unknown journalist had posted a photo of his sister on Facebook, falsely claiming she required surgery, and sought public donations through the fabricated story. The deceptive appeal, intended to mislead and exploit, constituted a serious act of cheating.
Subsequently, FIR No. 21/2025 was registered under sections 318(2) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and a formal investigation was launched.
The police identified the administrator of the Facebook page behind the fake post as Mohammad Lateef Lone, a resident of Tujan, Pulwama. He has since been arrested. Another individual, Amir Yousuf Khan from Bandipora (currently residing in Gulab Bagh, Zakoora), was also identified for providing the bank account used to collect the illicit donations. He too has been taken into custody.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to locate and apprehend any additional individuals connected to the fraud.
Police have issued a public advisory, urging media professionals and citizens not to engage with or circulate the fraudulent Facebook post, as doing so could further the scam and harm the victimโs family.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police emphasized the importance of public awareness and encouraged people to report any suspicious or unauthorized online fundraising to their nearest police station.
