Kargil, May 30: The long-pending demand for an MRI machine at the District Hospital Kargil is finally being fulfilled, thanks to swift administrative action following a formal request made to the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Ladakh.

The appeal was raised by Sajjad Hussain Kargili, Political Incharge of Jamiat Ulema Isna Ashriya Kargil (JUIAK) and a prominent social activist, who emphasized the urgent need for this vital diagnostic tool.

In response to his representation on May 22, Dr. Franklin Laltinkhuma, Secretary to the LG, issued a directive on May 23 to the Principal Secretary of Health and Medical Education, calling for immediate steps toward the installation of the MRI machine.

Importantly, the Directorate of Health Services, Ladakh had already initiated the process before the appeal. On May 17, a work order was issued to M/s GE Healthcare for the supply and installation of a state-of-the-art 3 Tesla MRI machine. The contract is set to be formally signed on June 9, after which the installation will begin as per schedule.

Sajjad Kargili welcomed the prompt response, expressing appreciation: “I am grateful to the LG and the administration for prioritizing this healthcare need. The MRI machine will be a lifesaving asset and will spare patients the burden of traveling far for essential diagnostics.”

The announcement has been met with widespread public approval. Healthcare professionals and residents have hailed the decision as a crucial development that will boost local medical capabilities, particularly in diagnosing neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. The new facility is expected to reduce the number of patient referrals outside the district and greatly improve access to essential medical services within Kargil.
