Srinagar, Apr 10: The School of Law at the University of Kashmir (KU), in collaboration with the Kashmir Jurists Bar Association, hosted a one-day national conference focused on the โ€œNeed for Institutionalization of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Jammu & Kashmir.โ€

Held at KUโ€™s Gandhi Bhawan auditorium, the event brought together legal professionals, academics, students, and scholars to discuss how ADR can streamline justice delivery, reduce the burden on courts, and ensure more accessible dispute resolution.

Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, Judge of the Supreme Court of India and the chief guest, emphasized the constitutional backing of ADR and its potential in reducing legal disputes. He also called for greater awareness and active engagement from the legal community to make ADR effective.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her presidential address, reaffirmed the universityโ€™s dedication to strengthening legal education and access to justice, noting that such conferences play a vital role in supporting democratic values.

Dr. Amit Vaid from the Bar Council of India highlighted ADRโ€™s efficiency in resolving disputes swiftly, while Senior Advocate Apurba Kumar Sharma stressed the importance of institutionalizing ADR in J&K through academic and administrative channels.

Other speakers, including Adish C. Aggarwala, President of the International Council of Jurists, and M.S. Latif, Judicial Member of CAT Srinagar, also spoke about ADRโ€™s significance in reinforcing the justice system.

Prof. Mohammad Hussain, Dean of the School of Law, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Iram Qureshi conducted the proceedings. Advocate Altaf Ahmad, President of the Kashmir Jurists Bar Association, delivered the vote of thanks. The conference was coordinated by Dr. Yasir Latief Handoo and was well-attended by legal experts, faculty, and students.
