Srinagar, Apr 6: Ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress party on Saturday urged him to refrain from bypassing the Union Territory’s elected government in any initiative or administrative decision.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Congress chief whip and Bandipora MLA Nizamuddin Bhat said the recently elected government holds a strong democratic mandate and must be consulted on all matters, including those deemed advisory.

“We appeal to the Home Minister that the state government, which has earned a massive public mandate, should not be sidelined. Any action, review, or initiative concerning Jammu and Kashmir must include the elected dispensation,” Bhat said.

He added that while the Centre and Raj Bhavan have the authority to act within their legal jurisdiction, cooperation with the state leadership is essential. “Constitutionally, morally, and politically, it is imperative to involve the government chosen by the people,” Bhat emphasized.

Shah is expected to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday for a three-day visit.
