Srinagar, May 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu on Thursday evening for a pivotal two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at assessing the security situation and meeting with families impacted by recent cross-border shelling in Poonch. This visit marks Shahโ€™s first trip to the Union Territory since the Indian military launched Operation Sindoor, officials confirmed.

Upon arrival, Shah was welcomed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and proceeded directly to the Raj Bhawan, where he led a late-night high-level security review meeting. The meeting lasted approximately 90 minutes and was attended by top officials from the army, paramilitary forces, police, intelligence agencies, and civil administration.

The review covered the regionโ€™s overall security status, current counter-terrorism efforts, and preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra scheduled to start on July 3.

On Friday, Shah is expected to travel to Poonch, where he will meet families affected by shelling, inspect damaged religious sites including the Singh Sabha Gurdwara, and evaluate the destruction in the region. He will also visit a BSF camp in Poonch to interact with jawans and address civilians at the Dak Bungalow, as well as BSF personnel at their Unit Headquarters in Khanetar.

The Home Minister will distribute job appointment letters to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the recent shelling incidents.

This is Shahโ€™s third visit to J&K since April 6, and the first following India’s cross-border strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK on May 7โ€”conducted in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, primarily tourists.

During his earlier visits, Shah conducted a three-day tour starting April 6 and returned again on April 23, the day after the Pahalgam attack.

Security across Poonch city has been heightened in anticipation of Shahโ€™s visit, with increased personnel, intensified vehicle checks, and additional checkpoints established to ensure vigilance.
